Bemidji, Minn. landscape architect Dick Rose passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 66.

Bemidji is in Beltrami County, northern Minnesota, on the southwest shore of Lake Bemidji, the northernmost lake feeding the Mississippi River.

The North Star azaleas that Mr. Rose specified in 1984 to soften the downtown hardscape still bloom each spring, Larry Young, executive director of the city?EUR??,,????'???s economic development commission told the local paper, the Bemidji Pioneer. Mr. Young worked as the project manager for the city?EUR??,,????'???s downtown revitalization project in the 1980s, with Dick Rose as the designing landscape architect.

The downtown project widened the sidewalks, renovated the square, incorporated parallel and diagonal parking, added planters, trees, shrubs and lighting, while preserving the historical character of the city. Mr. Rose designed the Tourist Information Center at the Lake Bemidji waterfront and the landscaping for the Great Northern Depot, which houses the Beltrami County History Center.

Among the work of landscape architect Dick Rose was the revitalization of downtown Bemidji, Minn. in the 1980s.

Mr. Rose was a musician and enjoyed playing and singing with members of the First Lutheran Church. A community-minded resident, he helped organize the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts, planted the flower garden in front of the building and oversaw the 2004 remodeling of the school.

The Rose family, Dick, Diane and their three young children, moved to Bemidji from Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1981 because this was where the couple wanted to raise their family. Diane was an associate professor of nursing at Bemidji State University until she retired in Sept. 2006 when Dick was diagnosed with cancer.
