Curtis Stiles


Curtis Stiles, 69, a Ventura, Calif. landscape and urban designer who battled leukemia, passed away July 14, 2007 in a Ventura convalescent home.

Mr. Curtis founded Curtis P. Stiles & Associates (CPS Landscape Architecture + Urban Design + Town Planning) in 1972. He directed designs on more than 2,700 projects from his downtown office in Ventura. His work helped shape scores of streetscapes and developments in Ventura and Oxnard. Other work includes Ventura Plaza Park, Oxnard Plaza Park and the Camarillo Old Town design guidelines.

His work was recognized by the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, Goleta Beautiful, Ojai Beautiful and the American Planning Association.

Mr. Stiles served in the Marine Corps and attained the rank of sergeant. He studied architecture at the University of Southern California.

Mr. Stiles served more than 25 years on the city’s architectural review board and later the design committee, where he was known for his frank assessments of design projects. He also served two terms on the Ventura Planning Commission.

Stiles and his first wife, Corene Goodman, married in 1958 and had six children. In 2005, he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Betty Vaughn, who passed away in March 2006 from diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease and Mr. Stiles is survived by sister Marianne Knight; uncle Jeffrey Stiles; sons Kevin, Daniel and Martin; daughters Robyn O’Conner, Carolyn Myers, Shauna Peoples; and 17 grandchildren.

Friends and family will hold a special wake at Ventura City Hall.
