William Teufel, of Woodinville, Wash., considered by his peers to be one of the most accomplished landscape and golf-course architects in the nation, died Nov. 5 after battling cancer.
Mr. Teufel was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, on April 5, 1925. In the 1930s, his parents moved to Seattle and operated a greenhouse for four decades.
In high school, he ranked No. 1 on the golf team and caddied at Broadmoor Golf Club, already looking at golf courses with a critical eye for which he would later be called a ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????master of greens and greenery.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
Mr. Teufel enlisted in the Navy in World War II, then earned a BS in landscape architecture in 1953 from the University of Oregon. He opened a landscape-architecture practice in Seattle in 1953 and for nearly 40 years worked with many of the best architects in the Pacific Northwest.
He designed the landscaping for the 1962 Seattle World?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Fair, now the site of the Seattle Center, and did the master landscape planning for Bellevue Community College. His master planning is seen at 12 Seattle area golf courses, including the Wing Point course on Bainbridge Island, Gleneagles in Arlington and the Bellevue Golf Course in Bellevue.
Mr. Teufel also designed the landscaping for many housing developments, hotels, office parks, commercial buildings and private residences. He was also a founding member of the Northwest Forum, a private group of various professions who meet to discuss solutions to regional problems.
Mr. Teufel took pleasure in his three-acre residence in Woodinville, Wash. near the Chateau Ste. Michelle winery. He described the home as an ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????elegant barn situated in a garden,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? referring to the 4,500 rhododendrons he planted and where he held an annual spring garden picnic for his friends.
His son told the Seattle Times his father felt he had a wonderful life, that he loved his kids, was proud of his professional accomplishments, had the opportunity to travel and had a lot to be thankful for.
