Cain, who was born in Illinois and came to Hawaii to join Belt Collins in 1966, died after a long battle with leukemia.
“Ray left a legacy of beautiful places where he worked over 40 years,” said James Bell, former chairman of Belt Collins. “People all around the Pacific Basin benefited immensely from his designs.”
Cain designed the original Francis H. Ii Brown Golf Course at Mauna Lani Resort. His work can also be seen at Tanjong Jara Resort in Malaysia; Aberdeen Marina in Hong Kong; Sentosa Island Resort in Singapore; The Sultan’s Palace in Brunei; the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore; The Fijian and Regent Hotels in Fiji, and The Anchorage, Tweed Heads in Australia.
In recent years Cain took great interest in the art of “healing gardens” for health care and elderly care facilities.
