After his Navy years, he went to work for the architecture/planning firm of Gwathmey-Duke in 1970, which was later acquired by the Benham Group. Mr. Spell was the principal landscape architect and participated as a member of the mobile design team. He then took a position with EDAW and in 1978 moved to Richmond, Va. to become vice president of Higgins Associates. There, his work included partnering with the city and the J. Fulmer Bright Foundation to improve city parks in Richmond?EUR??,,????'?????<

In 1997, after 19 years with Higgins, he opened his own firm. His latest projects involved private homes and planned communities.

Mr. Spell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cary Spell of Richmond, and three daughters: Ashley, in Chicago and Elizabeth and Molly in Richmond. He also leaves behind his parents, William and Helen Spell of Mechanicsville, his sister, Susie, in Kansas, and two grandchildren.
