Joseph Anthony Marshall III, age 68, of Plymouth, Mass., passed away peacefully on New Years Eve, 2015.

Joe graduated from Milton High School, Milton, Mass., where he was captain of the hockey team. He attended Norwich Academy, and earned an undergraduate degree and a master's degree in landscape and architecture design from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Joe served as a 1st lieutenant in the Marines in Vietnam. Following his graduation with his master's degree in landscape architecture from the U of Mass in 1976, Joe worked as assistant town planner in Amherst, and as a senior planner for the city of Fitchburg. He joined the firm of Marshall/Gary in 1980, where he practiced as a principal and registered landscape architect until 2014, then as an associate at Horiuchi Solien in Falmouth, Mass.

Joe's practice focused on public sector projects, including the Southwest Corridor Park, Franklin Park Zoo and numerous parks in the Boston metro area, including Danehy Park in Cambridge and Riverfront Park in Lawrence. His design and construction acumen was an asset to the profession but above all his good nature and concern for people made anyone in his presence feel valued and comfortable.

Joe served for over 20 years on the Plymouth Design Review Committee, most recently as its chairman. He was an avid sailor of his 18' Hobie Cat. He is survived by his wife Terry Prescott Marshall, his children, Sarah Jordan, Joseph A. Marshall IV, and Crystal Alferes, and his seven grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Joseph Anthony Marshall Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 3143, Plymouth, MA 02361, with its mission to serve the betterment of the Plymouth community.
