Harry Joseph Baldwin, 86, of Doraville, Ga. passed away March 12, 2010 at St. Joseph?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Hospital of heart failure. Mr. Baldwin left his mark on Atlanta-area landscapes. His nearly 60 years of landscape architecture work included numerous apartment complexes, office parks and subdivisions in Atlanta. His favorite work was designing parks to let people connect with nature. He also did master plans for the campuses of Morehouse College and West Georgia University, Gwinnett Technology Park, Ebenezer Baptist, Wesley Woods Seniors Center, a wheelchair-accessible garden at the Shepherd Center and a number of marinas at The ASLA honored Mr. Baldwin?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s designs with two awards: in 1984 for his plan for Emmie Smith Park in Lithonia, and in 1985 for his renovation of DeKalb Memorial Park on Atlanta?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s eastern perimeter. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Harry?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s designs were bold, nothing frail or indecisive about them,?EUR??,,????'?????<? recalls Ed Daugherty, an Atlanta landscape architect and a classmate of Mr. Baldwin 60 years ago at the University of Georgia?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s School of Environmental Design. Jim King of Dawsonville, an architect and former employee of Mr. Baldwin, says Harry mentored many newcomers to the profession and called him the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?grandfather of landscape architecture in metro Atlanta.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Architect Roy Ashley, an employee of Mr. Baldwin, says Harry taught him everything he knows about landscaping and notes he preserved the natural character of sites as much as possible. He also remembers him as a meticulous planner whose ?EUR??,,????'?????<?blueprints could be works of art.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Harry graduated from Tech High in 1943 and served in the Navy as an aviation cadet. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a major in landscape architecture in 1949. He worked for Martini Assoc., Atlanta, Liles, Bissett, Carlyle & Wolf, Columbia, S.C. and Bartholomew & Assoc., Atlanta. Mr. Baldwin took over Martini?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s business in 1965 and renamed it Baldwin Associates. He practiced landscape architecture until 2005. Mr. Baldwin had recently donated to the Cherokee Garden Library plans he drew for more than 100 projects, his correspondence with clients and before-and-after photos of some of his project sites. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?The collection is a treasure for architects, urban planners and historians to study,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Staci Catron, the library director. Two daughters, Nanette and Lynn, a son, Bob, two brothers, Doug and Tom, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive Harry Baldwin.
