Warren Finch Purdy (1924-2010)

Warren Finch Purdy, one of the founders of the California Landscape Contractors of America in 1962, passed away on May 7, 2010 at the age of 85 in Palm Beach, Fla.

Warren was born in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1924 to the late Frederick and Gertrude Purdy and moved to California after World War II with his wife, Gene. He relocated to Houston in 1977, where he met his present wife, Penny. They moved to Palm Coast, Fla. in 1999.

Warren served in World War II in the Mediterranean theater of operations with the Army Air Corps, 97th Bomb Group, the youngest pilot of the B-17 aircraft at 18 years old.

After the war he graduated from the University of Southern California and owned and operated several landscape and management consultant companies.

His wife, Penny, informed LASN that he enjoyed and read Landscape Architect and Specifer News magazine from cover to cover and was active in all phases of the landscape industry.

He wrote several books, including Profits From Successful Management (1996), based on his business system.

Warren was active, enjoying skiing, golf, hunting and entertaining friends in his home.

Among his surviving relatives is his wife and best friend, Penny, his sister, Cindy; his daughter, Susan and her children, Harrison and Emily, and son David.

The funeral service for Warren Purdy was held Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of St. Augustine, Fla. He was interred with military honors in Jacksonville National Cemetery.
