Gene Schrickel Jr., FASLA, one of the early licensed landscape architects in Texas.


Gene Schrickel Jr., 78, a lifelong resident of Arlington, Texas, passed away July 3, 2005 surrounded by his loved ones. Gene was born June 9, 1927 in Dallas and attended North Texas Agricultural College (now the University of Texas at Arlington?EUR??,,????'??+UTA) for a year before serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, then returned to NTAC where he co-captained the A&M basketball team during his senior year and lettered in tennis and baseball.

He received his bachelor?EUR??,,????'???s degree in landscape architecture from Texas A&M in 1950 and co-founded a firm in 1955 that is now Schrickel, Rollins and Associates. Mr. Schrickel?EUR??,,????'???s early work was residential, but expanded to municipal and commercial endeavors like the Bell Helicopter facility and the American Airlines Stewardess College, now the American Airlines Training and Conference Center. His firm also provided master landscape plans for Texas A&M University, Texas State University and a number of parks and golf courses.

Mr. Schrickel became a guest columnist on landscape architecture for The New York Times, and his work appeared in House Beautiful and Better Homes and Gardens.
Mr. Schrickel was president of the Texas chapter of ASLA and an ASLA trustee, director of the Council of Park and Recreation Consultants, and appointed to the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners by the governor.

In 1993, he was inducted into the UT-Arlington athletic hall of honor. Gene and his wife, Helen, endowed a landscape architecture scholarship at UTA in memory of his parents, Ollie and Blanche. In 1998, he received an outstanding alumnus award from the Texas A&M College of Architecture.
He was a founding member of the Arlington Tennis Association, served as board president and leader in the first Arlington YMCA building campaign, was a past board member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Arlington Visitors and Convention Bureau Advisory Board and past president of the Arlington Rotary Club.

Gene was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church, the Texas A&M Letterman?EUR??,,????'???s Club and 12th Man Foundation, Association of Former Students, Tarrant County A&M Club and the UTA Maverick Club and Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen; daughters Stacy, Amy and Lucy, and son, Robert; sisters Margaret and Blanche; a host of nieces and nephews and 10 grandchildren.
