Every son of an accomplished, well-known father knows he?EUR??,,????'?????<

The father was Edward Durell Stone (1902-1978), an American architect of renown. In the late 1940s and early 1950s he was the chief design critic and associate professor of architecture at the Yale University School of Architecture.

Just a short chronology of his work: Radio City Music Hall at Rockefeller Center, NYC (with Wallace Harrison and Donald Deskey, 1932); Museum of Modern Art, NYC ((with Philip S. Goodwin, 1937); the Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto, Calif, 1955; the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., 1962; the GM Building, NYC, 1964; and the PepsiCo World Headquarters, Purchase, N.Y., 1967.

Of the five children, Edward Jr. and brother B. Hicks followed in their father?EUR??,,????'?????<

Edward founded the landscape architecture firm Edward D. Stone Jr. and Associates (EDSA) in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 1960. Today the firm also has offices in Orlando, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Beijing and employs 150 people.

Edward Durell Stone Jr. was born in Norwalk, Conn. and attended hill school in Pottstown, Pa. He was an Air Force fighter pilot and served from 1954 to 1957, attaining the rank of captain.

He earned a BA in architecture from Yale University and an MLA from Harvard.

He began his landscape architecture career in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. with landscape architecture pioneer Frederic Stresau.

Mr. Lalli is the EDSA president and managing principal. He spoke about a current EDSA project?EUR??,,????'?????<

Edward Stone Jr. was named to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Class of Fellows in 1974, and received the ASLA Medal in 1994 for lifetime achievements, the highest honor bestowed by the ASLA.

He served terms on the Commission of Fine Arts under presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter. He was a consultant to the Committee for a More Beautiful Capitol in Washington, D.C., and to the Governor?EUR??,,????'?????<

Mr. Stone is survived by his wife, Lollie (nee Helen Ecclestone), of Vero Beach; sons, Edward and Matthew; daughter, Patricia Stone, of San Francisco; grandchildren, Sarah, Lily and Peter Koch; brothers, Robert, of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Benjamin, of Roxbury, Conn.; sisters, Francesca and Fiona; step-daughters, Margaret Shaffer of Palm Beach and Sheila Crosby of North Palm Beach; step-grandchildren Turner and Courtney Reynolds; and a nephew, Michael.

Services will be held July 16, 2009 in Vero Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Trinity Church in Vero Beach, the Visiting Nurse Association/Hospice in Vero Beach, or the ASLA EDSA Minority Scholarship in Washington, D.C.
