Pennsylvania native Arthur Jack Snyder, 87, who received his landscape architecture degree in 1939 from Penn State University and became a noted golf course designer, passed away Feb. 12, 2005 in Phoenix.
Early in his career he, like his two brothers, was trained to be a golf course superintendent by his father, Arthur, a greenskeeper. During World War II, he did land surveying, and in 1958 turned to golf course design, working in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Hawaii. During his career, he did design work on some 50 courses.
He was president (1982-83) and a Fellow (1987) of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
His wife, Ruth, passed on in 1995. He is survived by daughters Judith and Jean, bothers James and Carl, a grandson, Nels Martens, and a close friend, Dorothy Hill.
Memorial services are scheduled for March 19 at the Mountain Shadows Golf Club in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Memorial contributions will go to the Penn State University Landscape Architecture Scholarship Fund, c/o Advancement Office, 215 Wagner Building, University Park, Pa., 16802.
