The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s drainage problems are being solved now that the museum property will have the first rain garden in Starkville. Designed to reduce water flow from rain, instructors hope that the garden will serve as a teaching model for landscape architecture students.
The first phase includes an 800-square-foot garden adding an additional 700 square feet of new plantings. Unique to the project is modified soil mix acting as a sponge and filter, which both slows and cleans storm water. Plants in rain gardens also return water vapor to the atmosphere through transpiration.
Wayne Wilkerson, associate professor of landscape architecture at Mississippi State University, estimates an overall project cost of $100,000. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????This is good design,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? said Corey Gallo, assistant professor of landscape architecture, who is also helping with the project.
He added that such an upgrade in storm-water runoff prevention would inevitably add value to the property. In a climate with short periods of water and long periods of drought, the garden features plants that do not require significant upkeep, Gallo said.
Because of the large amount of water necessary for irrigation, any rainwater will be stored in a large cistern with a mesh that protects against mosquitoes and other pests. Plans also include a green roof, which may be the first in Starkville. Popular in many urban areas, green roofs reduce storm water run off due to water absorbing vegetation.
