Minn. Urban Tree Study

Funded by Rainbow Tree care in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Rec Board, city of St. Louis Park and the University of Minnesota, crews plan to test 350 mature trees around Cedar Lake, Lake Harriet, Boom Island and St. Louis Park in a one-of-a-kind study focused on urban tree health.

Over the next four years, the tree health research initiative will conduct 11 different experiments on 10 tree varieties like Red Cedar, Little Leaf Linden, and Bur Oak.

Many of them will involve an air spade to loosen soil, followed by adding prescription organic fertilizer and then mulch cover.

Treated trees will be monitored for growth and foliage, and will also be examined for stress, disease and insect resistance. The goal of the study is to find out what soil treatments help mature trees in a metropolitan area thrive.
