Mini-Functioning Green Roof Models

The working green roof models are constructed of aluminum, a TPO roof membrane, filter fabric, perimeter edging, drainage aggregate, growth media/plants and Plexiglas viewing of the inner workings.

Every year when LASN goes to the ASLA Expo we discover new products and innovations. This year in Chicago, we came across the Skol booth, a manufacturer of aluminum edging for green roofs. What was of particular interest was that Skol brought along mini-functioning green roof models as demonstration aids. These working green roof models were constructed of aluminum, a TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roof membrane, filter fabric, perimeter edging, drainage aggregate (gravel) or drainage mat, growth media and plants. A plexiglass viewing allowed you to see the inner workings. In the center was a roof drain and a built-up inspection chamber assembly. A secondary drain was provided at the parapet wall in the nonvegetated area, with scupper fencing to prevent clogging by media and debris. Water drained to a concealed trough and out a spigot into a graduated collection receptacle for measuring purposes.

Data collection tools available included temperature sensors, pit sensor and weight-bearing sensor for greater understanding of the benefits of green roofs to the environment.

This is the green roof installation at the Jesse Owens Field House in Calumet Heights, Ill. The installation uses aluminum edging (Skol) without bolt or rivets.

The models caught the attention of many of the landscape architects at the show, to the extent that some were sold, not the original intent of bringing the models. Skol realized these models were an excellent tool for landscape architects and other landscape designers to show clients how green roofs work. Skol reports that schools have also shown interest in these models to help instruct students how to build a green roof. By extension, the models would also seem helpful for training green roof installation teams.
