Oakland County International Airport is getting a new passenger terminal.
Construction of the new ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????and smaller?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? terminal will begin in 2009 using ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????green?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? building techniques.
The new terminal will also make a good first impression on business executives visiting and considering doing business in Oakland County, county Executive L. Brooks Patterson said at a recent news conference.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Virtually all the Fortune 500 companies come through this building,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Patterson said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????The building ought to reflect what we?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??re trying to accomplish.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We can make it a very attractive gateway to Oakland County,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? he said of the futuristic design.
The general aviation airport is home to 800 private and corporate aircraft. It is the 71st busiest airport in the country based on takeoffs and landings. It?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s also the second busiest in the state after Detroit Metropolitan Airport despite the fact that it has no scheduled passenger service.
Construction of the environmentally friendly terminal will cost $5.5 million and be paid from the county?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Airport Fund. The money in the fund comes from fees charged to users of the county-operated airport in Waterford Township.
The new terminal will be constructed on the same site as the existing terminal, but it will be smaller at 13,500 square feet; the current building is 17,000 square feet.
Besides using recycled materials, the new building will use wind power to offset electrical energy costs, geothermal power and rainwater for landscaping irrigation.
The county plans to seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the terminal.
The new terminal will include airport administrative offices, space for U.S. Customs and a meeting room that can accommodate 80 people.
