Mia Lehrer + Associates has won the 2008 Urban Design Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, California Council, for their Master Plan design for the Los Angeles River Revitalization.

The Los Angeles River is one of the most under-utilized natural resources in the Los Angeles area. The river runs 51 miles through much of urban Los Angeles. As it exists today, the river has been reinforced in concrete to provide necessary flood protection. In many parts of Los Angeles, old rail yards, warehouses and industrial uses line the River?EUR??,,????'???s edge.

The Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan aims to transform 32 miles of concrete-lined River into public green space in the heart of one of America?EUR??,,????'???s most populated cities. Key civic leaders joined forces to fund a visionary and technical look at changing the river into a new amenity, a source of socio-economic revitalization and a crucial step in the re-greening the City of Sprawl. The master plan is the result of a comprehensive analysis and many stakeholder and public meetings. A bold commitment is made to restore riparian habitat and to reconnect park-poor neighborhoods to River green space. This plan presents a vision for transforming the River over several generations, creating a significant public legacy for the children and grandchildren of those who will witness its implementation. Making the River green and accessible is expected to transform an undervalued asset into a valued amenity.
