Austin ISD Menchaca Elementary School was one of the first modernization projects completed as a part of the 2017 Bond program. This ground up design fosters community engagement and collaborative learning through the design of innovative learning environments. More than 30% of the site is open, vegetated space, creating direct links between outdoors and learning environments. This includes an outdoor reading garden and de-escalation space, an outdoor classroom, and two universally accessible playgrounds.

The design, construction and campus architectural team truly created this design and executed it hand in hand, and used the building of the new campus, right next to the existing school as a learning tool for students of all grade levels.

The upcoming School & Campus Design Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
