McKnight Landscape Architects

Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama

McKnight Landscape Architects provides comprehensive services in landscape architectural planning and design. Every project begins with a thorough analysis to ensure that design solutions respond to the site's unique context. Design proposals are rooted in place, informed by a deep understanding of their clients and their programs, and enriched by personal experience. Collaboration is central to the firm's process - they partner with leading consultants to create landscapes that are distinctive, purposeful, and resonant. McKnight's goal is to seamlessly integrate natural and built environments, shaping places that feel both intentional and timeless. The team's portfolio reflects their passion for shaping spaces that people enjoy and connect with. They believe that successful outcomes arise from a thoughtful approach, a clear process, and strong collaborative relationships.

Louisiana Modern; Baton Rouge, LA

This thoughtfully planned Southern garden embraces minimalism and serenity, offering comfort in its proportional spaces and a seamless flow between indoors and out. Set in Baton Rouge's historic Mid-City neighborhood, the residence merges modernist, Palm Springs-inspired ideas with the character of South Louisiana. McKnight collaborated closely with the clients to reimagine the property, combining simplicity and whimsy and balancing these aspirations with respect for the neighborhood's historic context and authenticity. From overseeing custom metalwork details to shaping a comprehensive master plan, the team worked across multiple scales to craft a holistic vision. PHOTO CREDIT: JIMI SMITH

Dr. John Ochsner Discovery Health Sciences Academy; Metairie, LA

Discovery Academy is a collaboration between Ochsner and Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, a local PreK-8 charter school. To extend STEM programming goals beyond the classroom, the clients envisioned an inspiring outdoor space that would further their shared mission. McKnight designed the 4.5-acre site with a landscape that integrates health and science into an environmentally sensitive garden courtyard shaped by the abstraction of planetary orbits and proportions. Planets appear not as literal objects, but as shifts in paving materials or gentle turf berms that enrich the courtyard experience. The result is a dynamic landscape that reflects the school's mission while offering students an inspiring place to learn, explore, and connect. PHOTO CREDIT: BRET LOVETRO

Spring Park; Denham Springs, LA

Once the lifeblood of European settlers, a series of springs just west of the town of Denham Springs were believed to hold mystical healing qualities. In recognition of this layered history, a design framework was developed that centered on the natural and cultural history of the area. The team revealed stories embedded within the site - its geologic origins, the remnant meander scar of the Amite River, surrounding ecologies, the rehabilitation of the brick-collared spring, the history of Denham Springs, and the legacy of the long-lost Springs Hotel. The park becomes a living narrative, where the natural springs and surrounding landscape tell the stories of Denham Springs' past for visitors to experience and explore.

Hello Park; Tuskegee, AL

Hello Park offers an inviting, flexible public space near the historic Tuskegee University campus, blending traditional collegiate aesthetics with the site's distinctive landscape. Visitors enter through a formal red brick gateway and move toward a hillside amphitheater. Stone steps and concentric seating terraces create a seamless flow between upper and lower levels adjacent to an elliptical lawn. Native plantings enhance biodiversity, support sustainable practices, and celebrate the region's natural environment. The park was realized through a partnership between Tuskegee native Lionel Richie and Lowe's Hometowns program. Richie envisioned Hello Park as a gift to his community, and its name pays homage to his iconic song "Hello."
