The Los Angeles waterfront is not only home to the nation's busiest cargo port, but also the World Cruise Center, the USS Iowa battleship, Willmington Waterfront Park (April 2012 LASN) , the San Pedro Promenade, (June 2010 LASN), Catalina Terminal, L.A. Maritime Museum, downtown San Pedro, Cabrillo Beach and Marine Aquarium, Point Fermin Lighthouse, restaurants, recreational boating and shopping, all against the backdrop of the iconic Vincent Thomas Bridge.

On Feb. 17, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced the formation of a high-level city task force responsible for advising him on an integrated community development strategy for the L.A. Waterfront, a visitor destination in and around the Port of Los Angeles and the adjacent communities of San Pedro and Wilmington.

The waterfront panel chairperson is Kelli Bernard, the city's deputy mayor of economic development, who previously directed economic development for the L.A. Department of Water & Power. The panel will include representatives from all the city bureaus and departments. The panel's task will be to review city assets that could benefit or impact L.A. Waterfront development, identify funding sources of government agencies and determine strategies for attracting private investment capital. The panel will meet regularly to facilitate each department reporting back to the mayor with its initial findings within 90 days.

Enhancement of the L.A. Waterfront is an important part of Mayor Garcetti's economic plan. "In the past decade the port has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in public access infrastructure, and now we need a focused effort on developing a commercial base of businesses," said Garcetti.
