While Versailles is known for the its magnificent chateau, sculptures and geometric precise gardens designed by landscape architect Le Notre, it is also home to a little corner of the world that was the domain of Madame de Pompadour and then, more personally, Marie Antoinette. It was here that Marie escaped from court life to quieter, more bucolic surroundings. Le Domaine includes Marie?EUR??,,????'???s home away from home, Le Grand Trianon, Le Petit Trianon, La Chapelle (chapel), the French Pavillon (for dining), the French Garden, the English Garden, Belvedere Hall (for small recitals), the Grotto, the Queen?EUR??,,????'???s Theatre, the Queen?EUR??,,????'???s Hamlet (a mock village that includes a vineyard, pasture, dairy, water mill and cottages) and the marble-columned Love Temple. Alain Baraton, the chief gardener of Versailles for the past 30 years, has been quoted saying he prefers the dandelions and wild roses of the queen?EUR??,,????'???s estate to the formal gardens of Versailles proper.
