One month into 2019 and the Hudson River Park Trust announced that it will contract James Corner Field Operations to design Manhattan's first public beach. The beach will be placed in Hudson River Park on the Gansevoort Peninsula, a 5.5-acre site located west of the Whitney Museum and near Little West 12th Street.

The beach will be opened to the public; however, multiple sources report that swimming will not be allowed. Additionally, the park will act as a storm buffer aimed at mitigating flood damage. Reportedly, public community meetings with the Hudson River Trust Fund and James Corner Field Operations will be held for local residents wishing to voice their input or feedback.

"Along Hudson River Park's four miles, we've been able to showcase some of the best landscape architects in the field," Madelyn Wils, president and CEO of the Hudson River Park Trust, said in a statement. "I'm pleased that the exceptional design firm James Corner Field Operations will join the ranks of the talented teams that have helped make Hudson River Park one of the great waterfront parks in the country."

According to Patch.com, a website for local news, construction of the park is scheduled to begin in 2020 and be completed in 2022.
