Founded in 1983, Mahan Rykiel Associates is a 35-person, women-owned landscape architecture, urban design, and planning firm based in Baltimore, Maryland. The firm works across scales to imagine and realize projects that enrich the human condition and support vibrant natural systems. Research and discovery guide project development that range from public parks, civic plazas, state infrastructure, downtown and neighborhood plans, academic institutions, corporate campuses, mixed-use housing, private residences, healthcare facilities, hotels, and commercial centers. The team includes six principals and 13 Landscape Architects.

The Mills Building, Washington, D.C.

A: The Mills Building, an 11-story structure at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue constructed in 1966, underwent a refurbishment and repositioning project in 2019. Mahan Rykiel Associates designed the Penthouse terrace and other expansions and renovations. The terrace offers commanding views of the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Potomac River. The river's natural beauty merges seamlessly with these cultural icons at the hearth of the nation, inspired the terrace design.

Sagamore Pendry Hotel,
Baltimore, Maryland

B: Completed in 2017, the Sagamore Pendry Hotel brings a historic landmark to life at the epicenter of the Fell's Point neighborhood. The 128-guestroom/luxury suite hotel boasts 10,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor event space. Mahan Rykiel's role included concept development through construction services for the site. The scope consisted of the hotel entry, two amenity courtyard spaces, guest and presidential terraces, as well as the design for the streetscape and waterfront promenade. The pool courtyard includes five custom-designed cabanas, offering guests solitude for spa services and relaxation. The guest/presidential terraces command waterfront views, providing an attractive, contemplative setting for residents. Each courtyard addresses a different programmatic requirement while collectively maintaining a strong and cohesive design aesthetic.

Rash Field Park,
Baltimore, Maryland

C: Mahan Rykiel was selected to re-imagine Rash Field as Baltimore's destination location for a diversity of uses, targeting users from across the demographic spectrum who are interested in health and wellness, arts and culture, local food, and urban nature. Planning for such uses involved a diligent public engagement process.Based on this input, a plan for Rash Field emerged that is transforming the area into a location for community members and tourists interested in health and wellness, urban nature, education, arts, and culture. After opening in November 2021, Rash Field's visitations went from a maximum of 5-10 visitors per day during pre-Phase 1 redevelopment to a post-construction high of 1500 visitors per day. Surveys show that visitors come from all around the city, including regional visitors who happen upon the park. Phase I is completed and Phase II ongoing.

MGM National Harbor,
Prince George's County, Maryland

D: MGM National Harbor, a $1.5 billion mixed-use resort, is the newest addition to the Potomac Riverfront. A 23-acre destination resort casino, the project includes a mix of retail, entertainment, and dining amenities. Mahan Rykiel was tasked with designing the exterior public areas and entrances, including the West Casino Terrace, the North and South Terraces, the Ballroom Terrace, the Entry Garden, and the Hotel Pool Deck, as well as the Hotel, VIP, and Bus Drop-Off areas.

Ballston Quarter,
Ballston, Virginia

E: Mahan Rykiel worked closely with the owner to develop a new public space and gateway to the repositioned Ballston Quarter project, with an emphasis on exciting forms, a variety of seating spaces, and user experience. The main focal point of the project is the sunken plaza. At its pinnacle is a dramatic overlook, which anchors the project to Wilson Boulevard. This space leads to the mews, which is a new, daylighted portion of the mall that has been designed to replicate a shopping street.
