PGAdesign by Staff
The upcoming School and Campus Design Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . . Madison Park Academy is one of several existing Oakland schools recently renovated by the Oakland Unified School District. The campus and new high school are notable for being designed to standards of the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), a national movement that strives to create healthy and sustainable school environments. As part of a team led by Byrens Kim Design Works (now DIALOG), PGAdesign developed recommendations and design alternatives to improve the outdoor learning environment of the new high school campus. Program elements include a large circular courtyard within the new high school campus, with a mound covered in synthetic turf and stepped seat walls for outdoor assemblies and casual gatherings. An updated turf area separates the high and middle schools, creating areas for lunchtime seating. Enhanced planting at both school's entries and within the revised parking lot add additional greening to the campus. Stormwater for the new high school is treated in a biotreatment areas, including one incorporated into the existing parking lot.
