Public Seating

At many high school and college stadiums across the country bleachers play a subtle role in home-field advantage, like by giving visitors substantially less seating and facing them directly into the afternoon sun.

Bleachers quite possibly are the most important aspect to creating a successful stadium or theater. They come in all sizes, shapes and colors giving your venue a distinct character and aesthetic appeal. For smaller crowds, at an intramural softball field for example, simple low rise or standard bleachers may be your best bet. However if you have to accommodate a few thousand football spectators every Saturday, deluxe or elevated bleachers would make the most sense.

Manufacturers offer a variety of features to enhance safety and comfort including: guardrails, wheelchair seating and accessibility ramps, powder-coated seat and riser planks, pre-fabricated press boxes as well as aisle handrails.

Another form of bleachers: This outdoor amphitheater seating area is part of Saddleback Community Church, in Lake Forest, Calif., won the CLCA Large Office/Industrial Maintenance award in 2004. Mowing the terraced steps is tricky because the mower must be carried down to each level. Furthermore, managing the slope water is a delicate balance between over-saturation and burned out, dry spots.

Seating options allow Landscape Superintendents to offer comfort and accessibility to all spectators. These design features can include:

  • VIP suites/press boxes: Many design options are available including camera platforms, integrated restrooms, tiered seating, etc.
  • Colored risers: These can add that extra touch of school spirit.
  • Special-needs accessible seating: Handicap and companion seats meet ADA requirements.
  • Freestanding or integrated roof: Check with your manufacturer for available sight designs to meet your site line requirements.
  • Drip shield with gutters and downspouts: These provide protection for fans and create storage areas under the grandstand.
