Louisville Expands Landscape Equipment Rebate

A local Louisville equipment dealer donated a battery-powered string trimmer to the city's air district, which will be used by maintenance crews at the air district's government office building. The trimmer can operate for a few hours, he said, if spare batteries or an extra power unit is on hand. Without the rebate, the trimmer and one battery pack sells for about $289; with the rebates, they cost only $209.

The Louisville Air Pollution Control District's rebate program for greener lawn-care equipment is expanding it's territory to commercial-grade tools like string trimmers and leaf blowers.

The district offers rebates on commercial grade Stihl battery powered equipment, and a variety of products for residential lawn care.

Agency spokesman Tom Nord said technology advances make these new tools very competitive with gas-powered equipment. People had complained that battery powered equipment wasn't powerful enough or could not hold a charge long enough for commercial use, he said.

The district's lawn care for cleaner air program has been around more than a decade and seeks to help clean the air by reducing emissions from lawn-care equipment. Any Louisville resident can participate, and businesses licensed to operate in Louisville can also participate in the commercial rebate program.
