In Los Angeles, residents are fighting to save a 14-acre piece of land from being bulldozed.

The property is the site of 350 small garden plots that are being tended to by families that are mainly Hispanic and use the land to grow lettuce, tomatoes, beans, squash, strawberries corn and cactus.

The city acquired the land through eminent domain in the 1980s from a developer who was paid $4.8 million when it was taken away and later resold to him for $5 million in 2003. After the city originally purchased the land, control was handed over to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, who then allowed residents to use the property as a community garden to help make up for the shortage of food in the area after grocery stores were burned and looted during the 1992 riots.

Since property values have more than tripled since the 1980s, the developer wants to get rid of the gardens to make room for a warehouse.

Unable to raise the $16.3 million required to buy the property, the families have turned to celebrity activists to help their case – this is Los Angeles after all.

Daryl Hannah, Danny Glover, Martin Sheen and Joan Baez are among the celebrities who have visited the farm to show their support and urge the city to have a heart and follow the lead of other major cities around the country that support urban gardens. Hannah has even perched in a walnut tree on the property to show her support.

Supporters camping at the farm have stated that they will peacefully refuse to leave if sheriff?EUR??,,????'???s come to evict them. Officials from the sheriff?EUR??,,????'???s department have no choice but to carry out a court eviction order that was issued on May 24, if an agreement isn?EUR??,,????'???t reached soon.
