Livability Issues Landscape Architects and architects could have a major role in alleviating problem WASHINGTON D.C. Livability issues seem to be the most important political topics to be addressed by state and local government in the next elections, according to a recent study conducted by The American Institute of Architects (AIA), entitled Survey of State and Local Officials on Livable Communities. "The results of this survey clearly indicate that officials and citizens are seeking to re-establish livable communities that are truly foundations for social stability and quality of life," stated Norman L. Koonce, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the AIA. The survey was given to executives from state legislators, county and municipal governments, and other executive agencies and departments, which identified traffic congestion, urban sprawl, quality of educational facilities, and housing development as the most serious problems.
