Little Change In Monthly Nonresidential Construction

The industrial-manufacturing sector has fallen over 50 percent in both month-to-month and year-to-year statistics, but has risen more than 60 percent from January-June of 2015, compared to the same time frame in 2014. The June stats were offset somewhat by the commercial sector in general, and its subgroup of retail in particular.

The value of all nonresidential construction starts in June was virtually unchanged from the previous month, according to Construction Market Data Group.

Nonresidential building dropped 1 percent in the month to $30.3 billion. This followed a 37.3 percent jump in May, largely because of two "mega-sized" projects, CMD Group said.

The June figure is also 4.8 percent lower year-to-year.

CMD Group collects, verifies and disseminates construction-related data to building industry professionals. It does this, in part, by maintaining long-term relationships with over 130,000 owners, developers, architects, engineers, general contractors and industry associations.

Commercial construction rose 14.8 percent, compared to the previous month, but has dropped 2.2 percent on an annual basis. It has declined 9.4 percent in January-June of 2015, compared to the same time frame in 2014.

There are several subgroups in the commercial sector. Retail is up 118.8 percent for the month, and has also risen 63.4 percent for the year. Private offices climbed 23.5 percent in June, but have dipped 42.3 percent on an annual basis. Hotels and motels dropped 27.4 percent for the month, and have also declined 16.5 percent year-to-year. Miscellaneous commercial has increased 10.7 percent on a monthly basis, and has jumped 107.8 percent for the year. Warehouses climbed 85.3 percent in June, but are down 28.8 percent year-to-year.

The industrial-manufacturing sector has declined 50.5 percent, compared to May, and is also down 54.8 percent in the yearly comparison. However, this category has increased 61.2 percent in the first six months of 2015, compared to the same time frame in 2014.

Institutional building projects climbed nearly 11 percent for the month. This sector is also up 2.6 percent for the year, but has declined nearly 13 percent in the six-month comparison.

There are several subgroups in the institutional sector. Hospitals and clinics are up 29 percent in June, and have risen 80 percent for the year. Religious institutions have shot up 92.2 percent on a monthly basis, and have increased 72.2 percent for the year. Miscellaneous government buildings jumped 308 percent in June, and have skyrocketed 440.5 percent on an annual basis.

Another sector, heavy engineering, has dipped 8.5 percent for the month, and has also declined 1.1 percent for the year. However, it has increased 10.2 percent based on the six-month comparison.

Subgroups include airports, up 94.7 percent for the month, with an 18.1 percent rise for the year. Roads and highways dipped 4.1 percent in June, but have increased 0.8 percent for the year. Water and sewage projects are up 0.1 percent for the month, but have dropped 4.9 percent on an annual basis.
