The Lighting Research Center in Troy, N.Y. recently released a comprehensive 42-page report on the use of mogul base LED replacement lamps. LRC survey went out to 5,000 industry contacts, and the LRC used data from people who were not affiliated with any manufacturing company or sales agency. The report also incorporated LRC's own validation testing of 18 LED lamps in combination with several luminaire types (i.e. outdoor area lights, interior high bays, etc.). LRC reviewed data and case studies supplied by LED lamp manufacturers. All indicators point to mogul base LED replacement lamps seeing usage primarily for their low initial cost in concert with an overly simplified payback formula. LRC report leans toward encouraging careful study of published data, and users should develop an understanding of how LED lamps will truly perform when they are placed inside of luminaires. Furthermore, published case studies for LED replacement lamp usage should be closely scrutinized, and quantifiable performance data should carry greater weight than just initial cost data. To attain a higher level of reliability, end users and specifiers should consider retrofitting with a qualified LED retrofit kit, or retrofitting with a new LED luminaire. These two solutions provide: LED solutions with quantifiable and verifiable performance; long-lasting, long-life solutions backed by a luminaire manufacturer's extended warranty.
