Lighting of Jefferson Memorial Cancelled

WASHINGTON-Due to the tragic series of events that took place on Sept. 11, the lighting of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, scheduled to take place the next day, was cancelled.

A release from the Lighting of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Project stated "A tragic series of events involving the loss of lives and property has compelled Osram Sylvania to postpone its celebration at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. Originally planned to commemorate the centennial of the company's formation, our affiliation with the Park Service and the Park Foundation will stand as a testament to the fortitude of the American people . . ."

The event was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Osram Sylvania and the 200th anniversary of inauguration of the nation's third president as well as the freshly illuminated memorial.

No new date for the event was announced as of press time.

The project will result in an energy savings of some 80 percent and will provide residents and visitors alike with an enhanced view of the building, its classical architecture and the monumental sculpture of Thomas Jefferson.
