Dr. Thomson, 94, of North Hollywood, Calif., has pioneered many vitamins and hormones for plants and created hundreds of products under the name of the Vitamin Institute. He is most known for inventing SUPERthrive?EUR??,,????<

The Lawn and Garden Marketing and Distribution Association has now recognized Dr. Thomson with its highest honor?EUR??,,????'??+the Lifetime Achievement Award. This is only the second lifetime achievement award presented by the association. The first went to Horace Hagedorn, now deceased.

Dr. John, as he is often called, attended college during the Depression, earning his way by digging ditches and winning essay and speaking contests. As a senior in the School of Government at the University of Southern California, he switched his major to biochemistry. He met his future wife, June, in a college logic class. They were married for almost 60 years and raised three children.

He was the paymaster for the U.S. Treasury during FDR?EUR??,,????'???s New Deal programs, and in 1932 he chaired the Activites Council of the World Council of Youth. During WWII he trained supervisors for the U.S. War Manpower Commission.
