BISMARCK, N.D. ?EUR??,,????'??? Professionals who want to practice landscape architecture in North Dakota can now be licensed in the state, as Gov. John Hoeven has signed a bill to adopt licensure requirements. The new law prohibits use of the title ?EUR??,,????'??registered landscape architect?EUR??,,????'?? by any unregistered person. Applicants for registration would pay a fee of not more than $100 and would have to meet standards adopted by the state?EUR??,,????'???s Board of Architecture. North Dakota had been one of only four states to not have a licensure program for its landscape architects. The others are: Colorado, Vermont and New Hampshire. Before becoming law, the bill was tracked closely by students and faculty at North Dakota State University?EUR??,,????'???s School of Landscape Architecture, as well as state officials who want to keep college graduates in state. Dennis Colliton, FASLA and an associate professor with the school?EUR??,,????'???s landscape architecture department, said only one or two of NDSU?EUR??,,????'???s 14 to 16 students who graduate from the program traditionally stay in North Dakota. ?EUR??,,????'??This is definitely going to help curb the migration of young professionals from North Dakota,?EUR??,,????'?? Colliton told LASN in an exclusive interview. ?EUR??,,????'??Until now, most students would start their job search at firms (in states) where they could get licensed.?EUR??,,????'?? Colliton said the most popular states for North Dakota?EUR??,,????'???s recent landscape architecture graduates are Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. The new law states that the first North Dakota landscape architecture licenses are to be issued in January 2005.
