Dear LASN: Please include more articles on California native plants and Australian natives ?EUR??,,?(R) not as much on hardscaping. Does anyone care about the actual living plants anymore? S. Gilmer Huntington Beach, Calif. Dear LASN: I have just received my (September 2002) issue of this magazine and find the articles on playgrounds most intriguing in their description of playgrounds. The article on page 36 discusses the issues of injuries in the playground with head and face injuries, usually as a result of an impact, are the leading group of injuries. In the subsequent articles and discussions there is mention of the ASTM 1487-01 playground Standard, the ASTM F1149-00 handbook on home playgrounds and the CPSC document 325. These are all standards that are related to the design and installation of structures and refer to the ASTM F1292 Specification for impact attenuating surfaces under and around play equipment. This is a performance Standard and failure to comply with this standard places a great deal of responsibility and liability on the owner, their consultants and landscape architects and some on the manufacturers and installers of surfaces. Since injuries as a result of falls account for up to 72 percent of all playground injuries, failure to consider this Standard on an equal or higher footing than those mentioned above could be detrimental to the child. One has to remember that an impact exceeding 200 gmax or 1000 HIC could well lead to a life threatening injury. Rolf Huber President, Canadian Playground Advisory, Inc.
