Dear LASN: Please do not put me on ANY other mailing lists or send me any product literature. G. Everhart Portland, Ore. Publisher's Note: Subscriber information is never sold to advertisers. The only way readers receive advertising is by requesting that additional information be sent to them via the advertiser response card. Dear LASN: If possible, tell the companies I've circled (on the LASN Advertiser Response Card) to send videos whenever possible. Thank you! P. Peletz Stouchsberg. Pa. Dear LASN: I have been a subscriber of your magazine for some time. As I did get useful information regarding the landscape construction and materials industry, I put up with your political and religious viewpoints. However, the September 2002 (Vol. 18, No. 09) was too much - way too much. My concerns are detailed as follows. On your editorial page you used the term "God Bless America" several times. What does that phrase really mean? Have you really thought about that beyond mere sloganism? All of the monotheistic cultures of the world adhere to the same God. Does that God really bless one country over another? I hardly think so. If so, would 9/11 have happened? If so, would we have the terrible poverty we have in this country? If God could possibly bless one country over another, how would He decide which one to bless? And when did God start blessing America? Did God bless America immediately when America was founded in 1776 or did God put America on a trial period? Did God bless America during its native-American Indian genocide period? Should God only bless Muslim of Christian or Jewish countries - and which ones? How would God figure this out? I could go on and on. My point is that God has way too much to do in this troubled world and universe to be playing favorites with countries. What makes this country great is it's cultural, ethnic and religious diversity. That is what the founding fathers had in mind with separation of church and state. You like to quote Jesus. In the September issue, you use the biblical quote "Destroy this temple..." One can assume you infer the "temple" to be Iraq. If Jesus were alive today, He would surely say the current religious war-mongering fervor is not what He had in mind as to "love of God's children, God's creation the Earth, and adherence to His teachings." His teachings have been so abused. Too often we hear them used as a justification for war - a religious holy war. Now as to the partisan political views frequently expressed in your editorials. In the September issue you state, "But had it not been for shady accounting practices, fueled by the previous 'you can't touch me administration...'" (my underline). Come on George, the current administration is no better than the last administration when it comes to ethics or illicit corporate connections. No doubt you have heard of Halliburton Company and Vice President Cheney's ties to that company. For many years, Halliburton was selling equipment and services to arch enemy Iraq. Can you blame that on Clinton? And what of the Enron, A.E. Anderson and other recent corporate scandals? These breach in ethics cannot be blamed on the previous or the current administration but rather on rampant corporate greed. You certainly have a right to both your political and religious opinions. However, your magazine would be much better if it stayed out of politics and religion. And while I'm on my soapbox, please put some women in the Movers and Shakers section. There were none in the September issue, nor seldom in past issues. I hope the lack of women in that section doesn't reflect a sexist bias regarding the place of women in the landscape industry. Now to my request. Please drop me from your subscription list. If someday your magazine changes to be less biased, I would reconsider subscribing. Until then, I'll get my landscape architecture news elsewhere. Thank you. God bless keeping us out of war!!! J. Hess, RLA Hood River, Ore. Publisher's note: The above letter was addressed to George Schmok, publisher of Landscape Architecture and Specifier News. EDITOR'S NOTE It was brought to the attention of the editors that there was an error in a news article printed on page 96 of the September 2002 issue of LASN. We inadvertently published outdated information for an event that had already occurred. The article was titled "Florida LAs Endorse Sustainable Communities Program." In our continuous attempts to maintain our status as the news pulse for the industry, we thank our readers for correcting this error.
