Being green can be expensive, as illustrated by the high price of LED bulbs. A recent Web search revealed some costing thousands of dollars and many of the common-use type selling for more than $50. The sticker shock can be relieved somewhat by considering LEDs' longer lifespan and the energy savings they bring but consumers still have not embraced the new technology en masse. That could change as prices for good-quality LEDs come down, which is happening as recently cited by Consumer Reports. They tested the newest and least expensive LEDs that are currently available and found they performed admirably. In their news release, Consumer Reports stated that, "The LEDs were as bright or brighter than claimed and the light color was as promised. If the box said the light color was warm, then it was warm." The bulbs that they tested were designated to replace 60-watt incandescents, were dimmable, and ranged in price from $10 to $20. Consumer Reports also tested LEDs meant to replace 75- and 100-watt bulbs. All of their findings on these recent LED trials can be viewed here.
