As the first Santa Ana winds of the season blow over Southern California at a brisk 40 to 60 mph, I can only imagine the intensity of the winds from Charley, Frances, Ivan or Jeannie. Every time the winds blow here, enough damage is done to ensure that the landscape business gets a good shot in the arm. Not that I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?m excited about the damage a hurricane, or wind storm can inflict, but they do create both an opportunity to attract work and an opportunity to show the strength and personality of the industry. Aside from the obvious ethical and legal requirements to not gouge those in need, this is a great chance to bond with the community, gather as an association of professionals and provide some pro bono assistance. To work ?EUR??,,????'?????<?off the clock?EUR??,,????'?????<? is not always easy nor necessarily full of community-wide recognition . . . Nor should it be. To lend a hand doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t mean it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s time to beat your chest and shout from the rooftops. But it is OK to put on your company shirts and drive your logo-laden trucks to the site. While it may be cool to make the evening news, it will be even cooler to go home at night and know you did that proverbial good deed of the day. And while recognition is really not the goal, it will be a result . . . a result that will carry more weight in your community than any ton of grandeur your landscapes can produce. Speaking of recognition . . . if you do do some kind of gratis work now or anytime in the future, be sure to take a few photos and please send them to LCN. We are always looking for the good in the profession and we want to hear from you. There is more information for publishing your work ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Off the Clock?EUR??,,????'?????<? on the last page before the back cover in this and every issue . . . And speaking of Ivan, et.al. you may notice a piece on page 11 talking about when Ivan hits the mainland . . . Thus is the business of deadlines and publishing a monthly trade magazine . . . I am currently redeveloping our house and landscape and thus went ?EUR??,,????'?????<?out to bid?EUR??,,????'?????<? on a retaining wall, pad leveling and turf installation phase of the project. For the sake of research I queried eight different landscape companies . . . The bids ranged from $18,000 to just over $50,000 . . . all for the same work!?! Being the smart consumer that I am . . .
