Jesse Cryns of JCMS Landscaping has been providing professional commercial and residential landscape design, build and maintenance services since 1979. Recently however, their donation to a local charity called Boys to Men, was the source of some attention.
Boys to Men, a charity begun by Joe Sigurdson and Craig Mclain, aims to mentor young boys early in life to give them the skills they need to excel in the future. Cryns?EUR??,,????'??? father, Joseph, has been involved in another organization called the Mankind Project for years, a program that mentors men, which is where the idea originated to target the younger generations. From seeing a need to help people when they are young, to receiving important life lessons, integrity, and going through a rite of passage and learning how important it is to be a positive member of society, this is definitely a unique experience for all involved.
The charity believes that there is a great need for boys to learn how to become men in our society, especially because of the high rate of absentee fathers, who leave their boys to figure things out on their own. This is also why Jesse Cryns chooses to donate a landscaping project every year to their annual silent auction at their yearly dinner/dance gala. His reason for participating is that he feels he benefited from being around his father and wants to help boys who did not have paternal guidance. Cryns donated a pond and waterfall to the auction that raised $5,000. Horizon and Savio also became involved by donating a pond kit. KRC Rock donated $500.
The pond and waterfall was built using Savio pond products, a bio-filter, skimmer and rubber liner with an underlayment. The flagstone was Arizona buff and the boulders were a mix of Arizona cobble and Sunrise. A quarter-inch of gold pebble was installed on the bottom of the pond, which gives the pond its shimmering effect and brightens the water.
The biggest challenge to the project was access to the location. The site is on a bank that had to be leveled and the pond basin dug out by hand. The water feature consists of a free-form design that mirrors the natural surrounding landscape. The pond is approximately eight-by-ten feet with a nine-foot waterfall. The entire installation took a crew of six only one day to complete, with a few touch ups made later. The pond also features a Buddha statue, in keeping with the oriental-themed yard.
The homeowner was pleased with the low maintenance required by the new water feature. The skimmer requires cleaning on a weekly basis and the pond should be emptied out and cleaned annually. The pump has a capacity of approximately 350 gallons per hour. In future years, JCMS Landscaping will also be installing a lighting project on behalf of the charity.
