The American Society of Irrigation Consultants (ASIC) presented two awards honoring the “best of the best” in irrigation at the 21st ASIC Annual Conference in Newport Beach, Calif. The LaFetra family received the Roy Williams Award, which recognizes significant contributions to the irrigation industry by an individual, organization or business. Clem and Mary LaFetra started Rain Bird Corp. in Southern California in 1933. The company has earned more than 130 patents, produces more than 4,000 products and is one of the world’s leading irrigation manufacturers. Doug and Karen Moore of VIT Products Inc., in Escondido, Calif., received the Sam Tobey Award. The couple has a combined 50 years of experience in irrigation. The award is presented to an individual or group who has supported the principles and goals of the ASIC while making lasting contributions to the irrigation industry.
The winners of the ASIC Excellence in Irrigation awards are: Bob Scott and Carrey June of Irrigation Consultant Services, Inc., winning two Honor Awards, one for planning and analysis related to their work at the Cauley Creek Water Treatment Facility in Duluth, Ga., and the other in the commercial and public works category for the irrigation system at the Sprint World Headquarters campus in Overland Park, Kansas. An Honor Award in the public works category was presented to Doug Macdonald and Richard Aust of Aqua Engineering, Inc., Fort Collins, Colo. for the irrigation system at the 75-acre Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix, Ariz. Stephen Smith and Rachel Barta of Aqua Engineering received a Merit Award in the planning and analysis category for their work on 40 tribunal ground water wells in the South Platte River Basin.
Lewis C. Wright Jr. of Landscape Architectural Services received a Merit Award in planning and analysis for his irrigation system design at the San Juan Park in the notoriously arid conditions of El Paso, Texas. Jeffrey Bruce and Chuck Dixon of Jeffrey L. Bruce & Co. in Kansas City, Mo., received a Merit Award in the planning and analysis category for their comparative assessment of the Denver Bronco’s Invesco Field and Pittsburgh Steeler’s Heinz Field.

Charles “Rod” Murphy is the Oklahoma sales manager of Irrigation Station, an irrigation distributor. Murphy has been involved in various facets of the turf irrigation industry since 1987.
Industry veteran Brent Shacklett is the Florida district trainer for Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting. Shacklett will oversee Vista’s new series of training seminars in Florida entitled “Light Your Way To More Profits.” Vista is among the industries leading manufacturers of 12-volt and 120-volt landscape lighting systems. Kevin Fulton joins Vista as district sales manager for Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Fulton has worked in the lighting business for more than 10 years and was recently the northwest regional sales manager for Unique Lighting Systems of Escondido, Calif.
Rex Lamb received the 2004 Supplier of the Year Award from The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC). This honor is awarded annually to a salesperson who maintains professional standards and renders service that is extraordinary and beneficial to nursery customers. Lamb has been a territory manger for Kellogg Garden Products for seven years. Tom and Jacquie Courtright have been inducted into the California Certified Nursery Professionals (CCN Pro) Hall of Fame by the CANGC. Individuals are inducted for their outstanding contribution to the certification programs. Tom, of the Orchard Nursery and Florist of Lafayette, Calif., and Jacquie, of the Alden Lane Nursery of Livermore, Calif., have provided a tremendous amount of support to the association’s certification program since the early days of the program.
David D. Furbeck is sales manager for the Greenbook properties at Vance Communications Corporation. Furbeck has a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia and is pursuing an MBA at Iowa State.
Green Earth Landscaping & Design, Inc. was awarded the 2004 Snow & Ice Management Association (SIMA) Award for Excellence in Business in the $1 million plus category. The award is based on business practices, customer satisfaction, community relations and accountability.
Aquarius Brands, Inc. has hired Alden Cleveland to the newly created position of Northern California landscape sales manager. Alden will be based in Fresno, California. Alden has many years of experience in the irrigation industry. He is a certified landscape irrigation auditor, and has completed the IA Certified Landscape Drip Design program.
