Hoping your summer has begun with great weather and lots of jobs on the books . . .
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? So what do you think about the price of gas these days? I say gas because there are a few alternatives that may be worth looking into. Last November, I wrote in this column about a company that exhibited at the Outdoor Power Equipment Associations?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? EXPO 2005. That company, Onyx Environmental Solutions, had an ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Envirogard?EUR??,,????'?????<? converter that allowed you to switch from gasoline to propane. At that time gas was around $2.50 a gallon and propane was about $1.50 a gallon. Now gas is about $3.50 a gallon and propane is still under $2.00 a gallon.
According to an article in Diesel Progress North American Edition, (Feb. 2006) by Dawn M. Geske: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Still in the prototype stage, Envirogard has retrofitted a Ferris Industries IZ3000 mower with 61 in. cutting deck to operate on propane, resulting in what the company said is up to an 80% reduction in toxic emissions and up to a 60% reduction in smog-forming emissions compared to a gasoline or diesel-powered mower.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Now Dixie Chopper has a new line of propane-powered lawn mowers . . . Not sure if they are in that company?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s line of the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?World?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Fastest Lawn Mowers?EUR??,,????'?????<? . . .
Bobcat, of course, has had a line of loaders that use propane, however, according to one of their Southern California reps, the horse power for heavy earth moving is not quite up there and he recommended diesel . . .
Still, I expect others, in many of the power equipment categories, to soon follow with their own propane or ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Ethanol 85?EUR??,,????'?????<? engines and I also expect the power of those vehicles to compete with the fossil fuels . . .
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? Still on the power theme, turn to page 10 in this issue to read a little about the emission control laws and how they are also pushing the manufacturers to consider alternative sources of fuel . . . and don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t forget . . . A buck fifty a gallon can help offset those increasing labor costs as the immigration battle continues . . . ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? So, speaking of immigration and keeping your eyes on page 10 of this issue . . . The battle continues with the Senate and the House both offering their own versions of reform. LCN has received many letters about my past commentaries and also re: the $34.00/hr story on page 10 that also ran on landscapearchitect.com.
From most of the comments it just seems that there is too much competition to offer traditional wages in the landscape industry to attract actual citizens . . . However, if the House bill dominates the floor then the price to hire illegals will push the costs of labor and thus the price of your work up the ladder . . . Maybe then the Workers Comp debacle will gain more attention from PLANET (the Professional Landcare Network) and the state associations . . . $25-$35.00/per $100 is just plain ridiculous, let alone if the new legislation means that you will be paying more per labor hour before WC kicks in . . .
?EUR??,,????'?????<??????? But since PLANET made the news it is also worth mentioning the proposed merger between PLANET and ANLA (the American Nursery & Landscape Association), which I spoke against back in the July 2005 issue, is a no-go . . . Good news as the nursery lobby, in my opinion, would wield a disproportionate amount of power over the landscape lobby. Just in sheer size, there are more large (read that ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Well Funded?EUR??,,????'?????<?) nurseries than there are large landscape companies . . . While a PLANET full of plants is a good thing, having the association root-bound would not be . . .
Of course those are just my opinions . . .
God Bless
