There are few things Americans enjoy more than decorating for the holidays with a string of lights. However, until recently standard incandescent lights or mini-lights were the only option and used a significant amount of energy, not to mention the added costs of replacing bulbs regularly.
There is a better way to decorate. Light Emitting Diode (LED) holiday lights have began a new trend in the world of holiday lighting. When they first hit the market, people were wary of the higher cost even for a seemingly better product. Often referred to as the lights of the future, LED lights provide many benefits over conventional lighting:
1. Energy efficiency- 0.04 watts per bulb; mini-lights use ten times more energy and standard (C-7) bulbs use 100 times more energy.
2. Long Life Span- Up to 100,000 hours and often come with a limited manufacturer?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s warranty. Incandescent lights may burn up to only 2,500 hours.
3. Safety- No chance of combustion from the cool temperature bulbs. Incandescent bulbs with a heating filament typically yield 80% heat and 20% light.
4. Sturdy Bulbs- The epoxy lenses are virtually indestructible. The wire will often deteriorate before the bulb will weather.
5. Easily Strung - Up to 20 strings can be connected end-to-end without overloading a typical household?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s electrical circuit. Experts recommend mini-lights only be strung together a maximum of three times. A residential property typically can handle 20 amps, while a commercial property is usually equipped to handle 30 amps before overloading occurs.
6. Lamp Replacement - If a bulb does burn out, the other bulbs will stay lit, so the bad bulb is easy to replace.
LED lights use a solid-state semiconductor to convert electricity directly into light. The light?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s color, determined by the chemical makeup of the bulb, with red, green, blue, white, and yellow available, also determines its cost with white and blue being the most expensive.
There are many options for exterior lighting, ranging from cost-effectiveness to energy efficiency, but it is important to exercise caution when selecting and installing it. Annually holiday lighting contributes to injuries caused by electrical shock, falls and fires, but can be avoided with the following considerations:
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Look for lighting labeled with UL or ETL, which means that it was tested and recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and satisfies the minimum standards for product safety.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? When selecting outdoor lighting be sure the package specifies that the product is safe for outdoor use. This means that the lights will be both weatherproof and designed for temporary operation during the winter months.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Consider using miniature, low-heat producing bulbs, they require less amperage and are less likely to overload the outlet.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Invest in timers to turn lights on and off, this will ensure that your lights are never left on overnight.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Outdoor electrical outlets should accommodate three-pronged grounded plugs and should be on an electrical circuit protected by a ground fault interrupter (GFCI).
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Use only extension cords designed for outdoor use with three-pronged plugs. Also, select an appropriate sized cord and tape it down if you must cross a walkway, etc.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Keep outlets and timers free from clutter in case you should need to disconnect your lights quickly.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Follow all of the manufacturer?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s installation instructions.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? If the manufacturer does not indicate how many light strings can be linked, do not plug more than three in together.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Inspect your lights before placement for any frayed, loose or bare wires and damaged bulbs or sockets.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)????????Use screw-in hooks or other fasteners that will not damage the insulation on the lighting strings. Nails and staple guns can easily cut insulation and conductors.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Attach outdoor lights to buildings, trees or other objects to prevent movement by the weather. Also, point the sockets down to avoid moisture buildup.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Unplug outdoor lights when replacing bulbs to avoid any risk of shock and always handle them carefully.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)???????? Remove your lighting at the end of the season to prevent prolonged exposure to harsh weather.
