The DanMyrna Foundation was formed to honor the deceased mother and brother of founder Ken Hendry of Hendry & Associates, landscape lighting and aquatic experts. The Foundation assists the families of fallen police, fire, service men and women and has created memorial ponds in Michigan, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina and continues to do others today.

The DanMyrna Foundation was proud to build a memorial pond for the wife and daughters of Deputy Sheriff Kevin Carper of the Spartanburg, South Carolina Sheriff’s office. Deputy Kevin Carper was shot and killed during a foot pursuit of a suspect who fled during a traffic stop. Deputy Carper had served with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office for
12 years.

The placement of 9 tons of boulders, 3 tons of washed pebbles, mulch, top soil were used for the completion of the pond. Plants such as blue spreading rush, gold strike rush, and red canna, were then added to finish off the manicured look leaving the backyard pond looking like it had been there for ages.

Ken gathered the help of many local landscape contractors, nursery suppliers, and citizens to build a memorial pond in the yard of the family of Deputy Carper. The idea was to give his wife and three daughters a place to sit and remember Deputy Carper in a tranquil and serene bit of paradise in a busy and often tragic world.

The hard work begins

Ken and the crew prepared the site for the new pond, which turned a sloped back yard into a 16×20 multi-tiered koi pond. Over 20 men and women dug the hole, laid the liner, and moved tons of rock and boulders to build this unique memorial. We were able to begin filling the pond by noon, which gave us a perfect time to stop and catch our breath. After a short break the creative side came out as we placed stones and boulders to create a perfect sounding waterfall and creek to the main basin. The pond was all created using donated time, materials with no cost to the families. We are proud to have landscape professionals use their skills to give back to their communities, especially in honor of the service men and women who dedicate their lives toward protecting those communities.
