Lawn Maintenance Up In Denver

Home remodeling activity declined nationwide in the fourth quarter, but yard maintenance services increased, according to a recent survey released by ServiceMagic, Inc.

Golden-based ServiceMagic operates a website that connects consumers with home-service professionals. Service requests received by the company for home additions and remodeling dropped 30 percent in 2010’s final period year-over -year. But requests for maintenance lawn services increased in double digits.

“Significant increases in convenience service categories reflect the growing trend of homeowners paying for home services that in the recent past, with tighter economic conditions, they were choosing to do on their own,” Craig Smith, ServiceMagic’s CEO, said in a statement.

The company received more than 1.2 million requests for service from homeowners in the fourth quarter of 2010, which was about the same amount it received for the same period of 2009.

Mirroring the rest of the country, most service requests in the fourth quarter for metro Denver, at 32 percent, were for maintenance and repairs, followed by systems/equipment and interior projects at 22 percent each. Exterior projects accounted for 18 percent of requests, while only three percent were for additions/remodeling.
