Not many computer applications make such drastic upgrades as we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve seen in AutoCAD 2009/2010. In continuation of last month?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s article about the AutoCAD workspace, this month?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s article looks further in depth at some of the new commands, improved features and accessibility of tools. File FormatOutside of the visible changes, a major change has occurred in the writing of the new file format, meaning that AutoCAD 2010 drawings will not open in older versions of AutoCAD. Not difficult to handle or new to program upgrades, it is something to remember when sending files to others. When saving an AutoCAD 2010 drawing to a lower version, select the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?save as option,?EUR??,,????'?????<? then under the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?files of type?EUR??,,????'?????<? pull-down menu select one of the previous versions, keeping in mind that some of the information may not be supported by previous versions (usually undetectable, though). Fortunately, the 2010 file format looks like the format for the next several generations of upgrades for AutoCAD. Improved PDF ExchangeOne of the great advances in the AutoCAD 2010 version is how interactive it has become with PDF documents. As a dedicated user of PDFs for a variety of purposes, it is due time that AutoCAD not only exports to PDF but accepts PDF documents. As a new feature, AutoCAD 2010 can insert a PDF document, which is similar to an image but is referred to as an ?EUR??,,????'?????<?underlay drawing.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Although it doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t identify lines or hypertext links, you can use object snaps to help retrace the drawing accurately. You can set it to fade and create a clipping path around it as well. To insert the PDF use the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Insert?EUR??,,????'?????<? tab and the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?References?EUR??,,????'?????<? panel. Select the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Attach tool,?EUR??,,????'?????<? browse for your document and insert it?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeall reminiscent of attaching an image. It automatically reads the PDF as an underlay. Similar to image attachments, AutoCAD links back to the original file, i.e., does not embed it. Although you can overlay many underlays and images with separate clipping paths or fades, you cannot bind it to the ACAD file or edit the original from ACAD. In exporting the file as a PDF, image quality has been improved with a higher resolution (from 400 to 600); even better, TrueType Fonts are exported as text instead of graphics, making for text that can be highlighted, searched or copied in the Acrobat Viewer. If you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve ever printed text as a graphic, you know the print quality is often much poorer in relation to the graphics, so this text conversion will automatically result in a much better print quality. ![]() This is the mask generated when using the Area command showing the selection space. Improved CommandsArea: The Measure Command found in the Home tab under the Utilities panel has increased in options to now include radius, angle, area and volume. I especially appreciate the mask generated in the area command, which shows you where you have selected so you don?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t have to outline the space in advance of using it. Block EditingBlock editing has been in transition for many versions of AutoCAD and it has come a long way from exploding and reblocking. For simple block editing, you can double click on the block and select the name of the block from a list. It brings you into the block editor where you can make basic changes, select save block in the Open/Save panel and then Close Block Editor in the Close panel. Viewport RotateAllowing for more diverse shaped viewports (under the View tab and Viewports panel) was an earlier improvement but more recently is the ability to rotate the viewport and the view inside. Type in vprotateassoc and set the value to 1. Then use the rotate command like you normally would on an existing viewport. When a viewport is rotated, the view inside is rotated to match the rotation of the viewport. Setting the vprotateassoc to 0 allows you to rotate the viewport without rotating the view inside. ![]() Image options are easier to access in AutoCAD 2010. Image Frames/Clipping/AdjustDeeply embedded under a series of pull down menus, Image Frames has also been made more accessible. In the Insert tab under the References panel, the options are listed. And they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve decided to use words instead of numbers to represent the frame options to display, print or hide image frames. ![]() You create a Text Style with annotative scaling. Set the paper text height to whatever size you want. There is a default annotative text style you can modify if you prefer. Annotative ScalingThe last feature I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?m going to discuss is about annotated scaling. Started in version 2008, annotative scaling allows for a more consistent look for dimension styles, text or hatch patterns when scaling viewports in paper space. If you haven?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t tried it, here is a simple exercise to get you started. Create a text style and check the annotative option. Set the paper text height to whatever size you want. There is a default annotative text style you can modify if you prefer. ![]() Down at the bottom of the dashboard you?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll find the Annotation Scaling scale bar. Select the scale that the drawing will be in paper space. For this example, we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll scale the boxes at 1:20 and 1:30. Start by setting the annotation scale to 1:20 and type inside one of the boxes. Then set it to 1:30 and type inside the other box. What you will see is that the text height changes, it basically multiplies the scale factor by the paper height, the manual method for creating consistent text height when labeling in Model space. ![]() The model space text is set with annotative scales 1:20 and 1:30. Now over in paper space, set up two viewports, scaled accordingly, and you will see that the boxes scale but the text height stays the same. If you forget to Not many computer applications make such drastic upgrades as we?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve seen in AutoCAD 2009/2010. You?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll see the boxes scale but the text height stays the same. It’s a bit difficult to use at first, but once you get used to it you probably won’t go back to manually calculating it. As mentioned this works for other features as well like dimension styles, leader lines and hatch patterns.
