Curious George's Country House is surrounded by Carrotwood and Strawberry trees. Shrubs such as Hibiscus, Boxwood, Fortnight Lilies, Penstemon, Grevillea and Sea Lavender add color.

Landscape Development Inc. (LDI) was at it again in 2007, creating a beautiful and quaint backdrop for the 2007 Project Playhouse at The Lakes in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Donating resources for the entire playhouse village, LDI helped make a fantasy become a reality.

Working in the summer's intense heat didn't stop LDI crews and staff from designing, supplying and installing a great landscape and hardscape for the village.

Donating time and energy to the Project Playhouse was not a new experience for the LDI staff. For the past six years LDI has donated its time, materials and creative design to Home Aid's Project Playhouse events in Southern California. Landscape Development works with various builders to make their playhouses look like unique little wonderlands and LDI provides resources for the entire village as well. Over these last six years, Landscape Development has contributed more than $250,000 to this important cause.

Home Aid Project Playhouse is a fundraising campaign that highlights the craftsmanship and imagination of California's top builders and architects to create playhouses that are auctioned off to support shelter development for the homeless. Landscape Development's staff has enjoyed stepping in to work with local homebuilders for this cause. LDI employees donate their time for these efforts, providing design work and construction after their normal working hours. They enjoy the reward of giving back to the community that makes their careers possible.

Landscape Development, Inc. provided the individual playhouse landscaping as well as that of the common areas. The entry area included bougainvilla, roses, sea lavender and lily of the nile. Also built was a 18" high stucco seat wall and planter with a 36" box crepe myrtle and iceberg roses. To tie all the houses together with a walkway, interlocking pavers were used.

LDI project managers have worked hand-in-hand with homebuilders such as Pardee Homes, Lennar, and Shea Homes. LDI's hardscape and landscape create and transform these playhouses into a large quaint village. Playhouse themes of the past have been a lake house called "Captain Jack's Pirate Ship Hideaway" and a themed dollhouse called "American Girl".

LDI's Antonio Magana and his crew were responsible for the landscape installation, and Rafael Estrada and his hardscape crews laid the pavers at the town square, constructed a great seat wall and poured the cement pathways to each house. A tiny village was born when all their hard work was completed.

It was truly a team effort to get this job done. Valencia, Calif. office staff that helped were Johnny Escobedo and his assistant Robert Shephard. They coordinated all the crews and plant deliveries. Regina Johnson from the purchasing department stepped in to make sure last minute purchase orders went through. Rich De Palma and Theresa Nelson Chada created the layout for the landscaping and playhouses, and Sally Parker and Emily Voges from Ventura and Nick Kish from Valencia participated in making this little village come to life.
