This May, Ellin Goetz, ASLA, was named the 2004 Naples Daily News Outstanding Citizen for her environmental community works. The distinction puts her in the good company of previous award winners including her husband, Michael Watkins, president of the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club, who earned the honor in 1997.

Ellin Goetz?EUR??,,????'???s stewardship includes time spent volunteering as a member of the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce?EUR??,,????'???s Executive Committee and NCH Healthcare System?EUR??,,????'???s Board of Trustees. Goetz was also a lader in the development of the Cambier Park playground in downtown Naples, which assembled around 2,800 community volunteers to build the project. The park, designed with input from Naples schoolchildren, includes an alligator-shaped slide, a pirate ship and tree houses.

Ellin Goetz has been leading the preservation of landscapes in Southwest Florida for more than a decade. Her accomplishments during the last year alone are impressive. In 2003, Goetz accepted the Award of Excellence from the Florida chapter of the ASLA for her firm?EUR??,,????'???s design of Parque Celestial, an astrological themed park built in the 1,697-acre Mediterra gated residential community in North Naples. Five more themed parks are proposed for construction inside Mediterra.

That same year Goetz was inducted as member of the ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s prestigious Council of Fellows for outstanding accomplishments in works of landscape architecture, administrative leadership, knowledge, and service to the profession.

Goetz is a past president of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the Southwest Florida Land Preservation Trust, Inc. In 2002, Goetz led a coalition of environmental group and citizen activists in a conservation effort that won voter approval for a $75 million land-acquisition program to conserve green space in Collier County, Florida.

Other professional achievements by Goetz include designing the master plan for the Naples Beach Hotel and the Fifth Avenue South streetscape revitalization in Naples, which in 1998 won her an Award of Excellence bestowed by the Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association.

Goetz also received an award from the Florida chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for her firm?EUR??,,????'???s design of Parque Celestial in 2003. As if those weren?EUR??,,????'???t enough accolades for a lifetime, back in 2000, Goetz was named Woman of the Year by Gulfshore Life magazine in recognition of her environmental stewardship.

What background could possibly prepare a landscape architect for such personal and professional success? Goetz earned her master?EUR??,,????'???s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts. She has a bachelor?EUR??,,????'???s degree in art history and fine art from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Goetz is president and co-owner of Goetz + Stropes Landscape Architects Inc. in Naples, and has been involved in that community for more than a decade.
