Medieval Dragon Right Here In Bowie, Md.
The landscape architecture department of the Prince George?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s County Park Planning and Development Division of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has taken the initiative to create new themed playgrounds for county residents. The initiative is based on providing exciting destination play spaces throughout the county to enhance children?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s imaginations through play.
One of the first projects completed under the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?imagination play?EUR??,,????'?????<? initiative was the South Bowie Community Center playground. The community center holds school-age programs, often hosting 60 to 90 youth daily. The existing playground did not provide adequate activities for the number of kids using the facility. It also lacked challenging activities for older children. Plywood covered the access platform, and the play equipment colors had faded. Rain consistently washed out the fiber safety surface, exposing the underlying concrete supports, creating maintenance and safety concerns.

The design for the playground started with two inspirations: a drawing of a dragon by the landscape architect, and the red ?EUR??,,????'?????<?O-zone Climber?EUR??,,????'?????<? rings. The landscape architect imagined the rings as the inside organs of the dragon.
Working with the playground equipment manufacturer through their local representative, Sparks at Play, a playground design was conceived that expanded on these inspirations. By adding a few customized items and integrating Evos and Playbooster structures, the designer and manufacturer were able to bring the medieval theme to life.
Glass-fiber reinforced concrete was used to shape the dragon?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s head and monstrous landing pad feet. The dragon?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s mouth opens wide for the children to slide. That?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s quite a long red tongue, or are those flames coming from its mouth? Metal scales were added to create the dragon?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s spine. A net climber and a belt climber were modified to resemble wings spreading wide on each side of the dragon. The four dragon legs were formed from standard play equipment with arched shapes. The result was a purple dragon playfully located between its nest of large, yellow-spotted eggs, a climbing rock and a castle with pennants flying.
Colorful, resilient play surfacing recreates a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?green meadow.?EUR??,,????'?????<? The shadow of the dragon is represented by dark hues in the surfacing. Surrounding the dragon are swaths of blue (waterway) leading to a moat, drawbridge and castle with pennants flying. The dragon is situated between its nest of large, yellow-spotted eggs and the climbing rock. Fencing (Ameristar Fence) keeps the little ones from wandering off into the forest.

Landscaping includes native plants that tie into the adjacent forest and keep maintenance low. Care was taken to avoid impacting the existing woods. The fall color of the leaves and red winter twig color of the shrubs will create a vibrant backdrop to the playground.
This imagination play space allows kids to have fun on a variety of features with different skill levels. The site design enables the children to link the features within the playground, whether pretending to aid the dragon in hatching its nest of eggs, or protecting the castle from the dragon.
