Teaching Michelangelo to create art . . .

By George Schmok

Hey everyone . . . Hopefully we will be seeing you somewhere by the great salt lake of Utah at the ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s Annual Meeting. If you haven?EUR??,,????'???t made your reservations yet you?EUR??,,????'???d better hurry because the educational sessions start October 29th.

LASN will be there with a booth and eight or nine staffers. As we have for nearly 20 years, we?EUR??,,????'???ll be all over the ?EUR??,,????'??show?EUR??,,????'?? from the seminars to the parties, from the exhibit hall to the Gala and from the opening ribbon to the final good-bye . . . So keep your eye out for one of the ?EUR??,,????'??LASNites?EUR??,,????'??? and be sure to say hello!

One of the greatest elements of the society?EUR??,,????'???s event is the advancement of its leaders and their induction into the ASLA Council of Fellows. For about as long as I can remember LASN has had the opportunity to showcase the new ASLA Fellows, and this year is no exception. Thirty-two deserving recipients will be inducted into the Council at a grand ceremony with tuxedos and formal attire . . .

The reasons for induction are many, but the theme remains the same . . . abundant contribution to the society and the profession.

Be sure to turn to page 66 and read the various quotes from the inductees. Humility and grace are certainly attributes of these great professionals . . . Congratulations to all 32!

And speaking of this issue, inside you will find profiles on more than a dozen LA firms from the western Rockies including the Salt Lake region, Idaho and Montana. This area is so rich in natural wonders that designing landscape for the area is a bit like teaching Michelangelo to create art or Mozart to create music.

While making a landscape in New York City or Los Angeles is about creating an atmosphere or enhancing well-being, designing in the western Rockies is more like giving back to nature what was cut and scraped from its belly. Designing in this vast wonderland is more about repair and blending than highlighting and emphasizing. It is more about scar reduction than implants.

The projects in this area are not more glamorous, but more subtle; not more effective, but more efficient; not more, more, more . . . they simply ?EUR??,,????'??are,?EUR??,,????'?? and in being so they enrich the environment and enrich the profession.

If you didn?EUR??,,????'???t have the opportunity to attend the meeting, make time to visit the area. While the profiles in this issue will give you a taste, the only real sensory appreciation will come from being there . . . Just be sure to bring your camera and your hiking boots . . .

So with another year pretty well behind us and the great unknown ahead, we wish you a fantastic autumn and the best of the best of the upcoming holiday season . . .

?EUR??,,????'??+God Bless
