Boy, what a response to the March editorial. So far, we?EUR??,,????'???ve received more than fifty letters to the editor (see the next few pages). I?EUR??,,????'???m sorry I waited so long! We are considering removing all the names and making the transcript available. I think the ASLA and IRLA could put the information to good use. If you are interested in obtaining a copy, please contact LASN.
I hear that things are running smoothly at ASLA headquarters, now that Mr. B has resigned. Apparently there have been growing tensions similar to the ones expressed in the Letters section. While there seems to be a new optimism emanating from D.C., there still is a serious question regarding the ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s recognition of non-registered LA?EUR??,,????'???s as full members.
In regard to the LA Alert concerning ASLA?EUR??,,????'???s magazine covers, while I understand that many of the interviewed professionals are qualified landscape architects, the new firms of the 90?EUR??,,????'???s are not best represented by a woodshop and, to prove the point, LASN will be changing its editorial calendar to feature the ?EUR??,,????'??Real New Firms of the 90?EUR??,,????'???s?EUR??,,????'?? in place of its ?EUR??,,????'??Corporate Landscape?EUR??,,????'?? issue scheduled for August, 94. You be the judge.
You have to give the ASLA a chance, though. I know there are a great deal of talented professionals who belong (or who have belonged) to the society. If the executive committee and the trustees can resolve the registration/ membership issue, establish regular and cordial communications with the membership, attract a representative number of RLA?EUR??,,????'???s to the Annual Meeting, and actually get the public informed. . . who knows. . .
If not, then maybe it is time for the IRLA. And maybe the old AILA was a precursor to the inevitable growth of the profession from a society of landscape architects and designers into an Institute of Registered Landscape Architects. . . who knows. . .
I hear that membership is growing and the IRLA is planning radio and cable TV spots to promote the profession as the critical link between the developers and the public. I know they have already sent a press release to the major media in most major markets praising the decision of Governor Thompson of Wisconsin for signing the new LA registration legislation. If you hear or see one in the media, please give them a call at 714-979-IRLA. They are also looking for more names of newspapers and local radio/TV stations. It?EUR??,,????'???s their goal to make sure everyone knows the value of the RLA.
On a sad note, it is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you of the passing of Donald Milton Roberts, a Registered Landscape Architect who came to LASN in our earliest days, and who with emeritus status at UCLA, set out to teach us ?EUR??,,????'??All the things you don?EUR??,,????'???t even know you don?EUR??,,????'???t know about landscape architecture.?EUR??,,????'?? Don was a great friend, a great mentor and a great advocate for the profession. Rest in peace, Teach. (For more on Mr. Roberts life and accomplishments see page 23.)
On another sad note, you may all want to reach out to Past ASLA President, Bill Swain, who recently lost his wife Marge to cancer. I understand there is a memorial fund being established through the LAF. If you wish to participate you can contact LAF directly.
Things change, life goes on. It is important to remember the past for it gives us courage to look to the future.
?EUR??,,????'??+God Bless
