Did any of you notice that Frederick Law Olmsted was featured in the June 30th – July 7th edition of U.S. News & World Report? The magazine, which averages around two million copies per issue, devoted a full page to good ol?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? FLO. The profile was the third of about a dozen profiles in a special section called ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Master Builders.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s works were detailed about as well as they could be in a full page, and focused primarily on his work on New York?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s 150 year old Central Park. It was great to see the father of the profession being recognized, along with Peter the Great (planner/architect of St. Petersburg), the Inca builders at Machu Picchu, the builders of the great Pyramids, and several other world renowned and historical developers. Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s listed works included the U.S. Capital grounds, Stanford University, Boston?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Emerald Necklace, and Brooklyn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Prospect Park. The magazine also included Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s work in helping preserve Yosemite and Niagara Falls as national treasures. I guess the father is still producing offspring even today . . . LOL Letter landscapearchitect?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Find-A Pro listing service is set up to assist developers, builders, investors and consumers in finding qualified professionals for their projects. A short while ago, I received the following letter regarding that service: ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It is ILLEGAL to advertise as a registered landscape architect in California without proper credentials. A SEARCH for Landscape Architects (ONLY) yielded numerous OTHER entities, such as designers, etc. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?[RLAs MUST be separate from non-credentialed designers. We work too hard for that registration to be lumped with those who have not.] ?EUR??,,????'?????<?IF this problem is not corrected immediately, I shall contact the California Consumer Affairs Division that regulates the practice of landscape architects. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ll check your website again in two days to verify that the ILLEGAL ADVERTISING has been deleted.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Well that sure struck a cord with us here at LASN. Some of you may have noticed throughout the years that LASN has been an advocate of the registration/licensure of landscape architects, so we immediately set to the task of rectifying this lapse in focus. If you now check the section, you will find registered landscape architects as the first option; that option will only pull up those of you who have run that marathon to get your license. The problem now is that while LOL lists several thousand landscape contractors, several thousand consultants, several thousand pool contractors, and several thousand vendors of all types, we only have about 800 listed RLAs . . . This number leaves many telephone area codes, which is the basis of the Find-A-Pro search, void of RLAs. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve set it up for you to be in the spotlight, so now you may want to go to landscapearchitect.com and show the strength of the profession and sign up yourself or your company. The listing is free and the service is great. Lane L. Marshall – 2003 It is again my sad duty to inform you that the profession has lost another leader to the ages. I learned on July 2 that Lane Marshall, FASLA, had recently passed away. Mr. Marshall was president of ASLA for the 1977-78 term and a true leader in the profession. While I personally didn?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t spend a lot of time with Mr. Marshall, I do know that he was well liked and well deserving of the many accolades he received from his peers . . . ASLA New Orleans I hope many of you are making plans to attend the ASLA annual meeting in New Orleans this year. The meeting takes place October 30 through November 2.
