Way to Go FLO!!!

By George Schmok

Did any of you notice that Frederick Law Olmsted was featured in the June 30th – July 7th edition of U.S. News & World Report?

The magazine, which averages around two million copies per issue, devoted a full page to good ol?EUR??,,????'?????<

The profile was the third of about a dozen profiles in a special section called ?EUR??,,????'?????<

It was great to see the father of the profession being recognized, along with Peter the Great (planner/architect of St. Petersburg), the Inca builders at Machu Picchu, the builders of the great Pyramids, and several other world renowned and historical developers. Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<

The magazine also included Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<

I guess the father is still producing offspring even today . . .

Well that sure struck a cord with us here at LASN. Some of you may have noticed throughout the years that LASN has been an advocate of the registration/licensure of landscape architects, so we immediately set to the task of rectifying this lapse in focus.

If you now check the section, you will find registered landscape architects as the first option; that option will only pull up those of you who have run that marathon to get your license.

The problem now is that while LOL lists several thousand landscape contractors, several thousand consultants, several thousand pool contractors, and several thousand vendors of all types, we only have about 800 listed RLAs . . . This number leaves many telephone area codes, which is the basis of the Find-A-Pro search, void of RLAs.

Lane L. Marshall – 2003

It is again my sad duty to inform you that the profession has lost another leader to the ages. I learned on July 2 that Lane Marshall, FASLA, had recently passed away. Mr. Marshall was president of ASLA for the 1977-78 term and a true leader in the profession.

ASLA New Orleans

I hope many of you are making plans to attend the ASLA annual meeting in New Orleans this year. The meeting takes place October 30 through November 2. The meeting is always a great place to renew old friendships, make new ones, and see first hand the many advancements in the profession.

LASN will be there in full force. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible . . . So until then . . .

Have a great summer and of course . . .
