An LASN Comments Card sent in by a reader in Long Island, NY prompted this exclusive LASN interview between CLARB Director Of Examinations, Jim Penrod and Nicole Adamson of LASN. I thought you?EUR??,,????'???d find the results worth reading about…
The passing rates for each section of the 1992 L.A.R.E. are given above. Sections 1, 2 and 7 are multiple-choice based exam sections, which test factual knowledge of Legal and Administrative Aspects of Practice, Programming and Environmental Analysis, and Implementation of Design through the Construction Process respectively. Sections 3, 4, 5, and 6 are performance-based sections, which require a written or graphic response. These sections cover Conceptualization and Communication, Design Synthesis, Integration of Technical and Design Requirements and Grading and Drainage, respectively. The 1992 Candidate Success Rates (graph below), gives another picture of examinee performance on the L.A.R.E. This graph indicates where candidates are in terms of completing their exam requirements by asking how successful candidates were in terms of passing what they took. CLARB used a control group consisting of candidates who indicated that they have a degree in landscape architecture and two to five years of experience.
Is there any way to know of the overall pass/fail rate (national or by state)?
The pass/fail rate is done by sections. People take different sections so there is no way to compute an overall pass/fail rate by category of national or state. What are the positive and negative reactions by candidates who took the exam?
Many people liked the new format. They felt the graphic test vignettes, (5 or 6 simple problems which look at certain aspects of an overall problem) were easier because you could pass, even if you miss one problem.
A negative reaction to the exam is towards the inability of the CLARB to mark on individual?EUR??,,????'???s drawings to explain why it was incorrect. Many people feel, ?EUR??,,????'??they do this for a living but can?EUR??,,????'???t pass this section.?EUR??,,????'??
In response to the problem, CLARB has produced a publication, Understanding the L.A.R.E. Volume 2, which provides two vignettes per each of the graphic sections for 1992. There are actual candidate solutions with redlines to show strengths and weaknesses of the solution in addition to evaluation criteria used to grade vignettes.
Any changes expected in the ?EUR??,,????'??93 exam? No, except for minor refinements.
Is there anything extra I can do to prepare for the vignette part of the examination?
Pre-Exam Orientation Information was sent to each individual taking the exam a month before the test date which provides answers to all those questions. In addition there exist publications such as Understanding the L.A.R.E. (volumes I and II) which provide additional information and sample problems.
